A Study on Ties
Published April 3rd, 2009 by John David MannWhile at work on a Go-Giver-related article about the Law of Influence (“Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first”), I was writing about the work of Harvard sociologist Mark Granovetter, Ph.D.
Dr. Granovetter wrote a landmark paper in 1970 that showed how (and proposed why) we have more influence on people we know vaguely than people we know well. Granovetter’s paper, one of the most influential ever written, is called “The Strength of Weak Ties.”
At that point, I happened to come across the following video.
I’ll bet even the good Doctor Granovetter is not even vaguely aware of the Strength of Pink Ties!
P.S. We suspect JenLoveLady pronounces Bob’s name “Burge” only because it rhymes with “splurge,” and she is thinking about where to go buy him that tie.

Bob, REAL MEN WEAR PINK TIES! Looking forward to the picture. Pink will highlight your eyes.
Great review…I love the book too! Cannot wait to send it to all of my business associates. I now consider it required reading for anyone who wants to work for me!

Hi Kris,
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that “real men also eat quiche for breakfast.” Oops, might be a bit before your time; that book was written in the 70s.
Hey, thank you so much for your kind words about the book, as well. Greatly appreciate your feedback, and am honored that you feel that way.
